Duhn dun dun...the glucose screening test

Today was my 2 hour glucose screening test and boy was it a challenge for me. The test is done to determine gestational diabetes onset by pregnancy.

The test went as follows: after fasting for 10 hours you have your blood drawn, you must drink 12 oz. of glucose water (it was the consistency of syrup and orange flavored like cough medicine) within five minutes, wait one hour, have your blood drawn a second time which gives the reading with the glucose, wait one hour and finally have your blood drawn a third time before you're sent on your way.

In no way was this fun, not only was the waiting anxiety ridden but the anticipation of having my blood drawn was a killer. Thankfully it only has to be done one time during the whole pregnancy and I'm a champ so I survived.

First trimester screen

Today we had a special appointment at Obstetrix Medical Group in Campbell, CA. There was an ultrasound to look at the Nuchal Translucency, a measurement of the anatomical space at the back of the baby's neck. This measurement determines the fluid on the spinal cord and the associated risk for Down's syndrome.

The results of this ultrasound plus a blood test will provide us with the probability of chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.

Time to meet the doctor

We had our first appointment to meet Dr. Cherng today. It was all sorts of emotions, getting the confirmation of being pregnant, obtaining literature on what to expect and prepare for, and the reassurance that this will be a group effort and everyone is there to support one another.

This is really happening

It only takes a few minutes for your life to change, and boy did ours when we had a positive resultant on a home pregnancy test. My expression went to nervous while Jon's went to utter excitement. It was time to strap in because it was about to become one heck of a ride.
